Bed & Breakfast

With a lot of passion and great attention to detail the guestrooms of Château d’Orion were renovated a few years ago and now all rooms are individually themed. At the moment of entering, you feel the distinctive character and it grabs your interest to discover the story behind it.

The stylish rooms are equipped with antique furniture of different eras and modern bathrooms. They retain the flair of yesterday and create a feeling of well-being with up-to-date comfort for high demands.

The Casamayor

The story of the house starts with the ‘Noble Casamayor’ family, who were responsible for the Lay Abbey of Orion in the 16th and 17th centuries. Following the custom of the day, the abbey was responsible for the community and its associated church. This model of the ‘abbey laïque‘ to support a local church existed mainly in the western foothills of the French Pyrenees.

The Francis Jammes

Francis Jammes, very much adored by Rainer Maria Rilke, was strongly connected to Château d’Orion. Rilke once wrote about Jammes: “This is a poet that I would have wanted to be like”. The watercolour paintings on the wall are originals by Pierre Brissaud, who became renowned for his poetic drawings around the turn of the 20th century. The pictures were painted as illustrations for Jammes novel ‘Clara d’Ellebreuse’.

The Marie Reclus

Until the 20th century the famous surgeon Paul Reclus guided the destiny of the house alongside his wife. Their daughters Marie and Madeleine could not have been more dissimilar. Whilst Marie, who later married Marcel Labbé, became a leading figure in the house, Madeleine mixed with writers and free-thinkers in Paris. Occasional visits from her acquaintances have made the Béarn the intellectual microcosm you see today.

The Parva sed apta

‘Small but sufficient’, says the writing on the tapestry covering the bedhead in this room. However, this inscription dates back to the year 1525 where it originally adorned the house of the Italian poet Ludovico Ariosto. Fully translated is says: ‘The house is small, but sufficient for me, clean, not burdened with taxes and purchased with my own money’.

The Chambres des Jeux

In this room you will find all kinds of rare treasures which were found in the cupboards of the house during the renovation. Let yourself be taken back in time by historic toys and children’s books of past eras. They will tell you stories of Château d’Orion.

Guesthouse, kitchen & garden

You can start the day with a French breakfast which is made of regional products and affected by the seasonal supplies. For lunch we present you light dishes with varied flavour and for dinner we offer you an elegant and exquisite meal.

A balanced diet is the starting basis for health and well-being. Therefore we obtain our products from local producers, from markets of neighbouring villages and little towns and of course from our own vegetable and herb garden. Our meals are inspired by the regional French cuisine and light Mediterranean dishes. In addition to these there are all sorts of interesting wines from Jurançon and other regional producing areas. These wines complete your culinary experience in Château d’Orion.

Do you know what African cucumbers look like or taste? Or have you ever tried Jerusalem artichoke? The vegetable garden which is fostered and nourished by our gardener Mélanie is like a colourful treasure chamber. Numerous tomato varieties, courgettes, melons, apples, cucumbers, Piment d´Espellete, different herbs like Moroccan mint or verbena and a lot more grows there. All this is gathered daily and then served fresh for your enjoyment. The connection between culture and agriculture are part of our philosophy and this you will taste in every meal.
